Service Mains Upgrades in Sydney

Your service mains are the cable that brings power from the street to your meter. If they're old, damaged or too small for what you're adding, Ampera Solar & Electrical replaces them under our ASP Level 2 accreditation, and upgrades your switchboard at the same visit if it needs it.

Signs your service mains need upgrading

  • The cable to your house is old, with cracked or perished insulation.
  • Your overhead line is sagging, damaged or close to trees.
  • The bracket where the line attaches to your house (the point of attachment) is rusted, loose or damaged.
  • You've received a defect notice for your service mains or point of attachment.
  • You're adding solar, a battery, an EV charger, air conditioning or an extension, and need a bigger supply.
  • You're renovating and the meter box needs moving.

Service mains and consumer mains: what's the difference?

Service mains run from the street to your meter, on the network side, so only an ASP Level 2 electrician can work on them. Consumer mains run from your meter to your main switchboard, inside your property. Old homes often need both replaced, and we do both in one job.

How a service mains upgrade works

  1. Send us two photos. One of your meter box and one of where the power line meets your house.
  2. We check what's needed. Including any network application for a bigger supply, which we lodge for you.
  3. Fixed written quote. The new mains, any point of attachment or meter box work, switchboard work if needed, and how long the power will be off.
  4. We agree a time. You know exactly when the power goes off and when it comes back on.
  5. Work and paperwork. We replace the mains, reconnect your supply, and give you the compliance certificate. We notify the network when the work requires it.

Overhead or underground

If you have an overhead line, an upgrade is a good time to consider taking it underground. It removes the line from your roof and yard, and won't be brought down by trees or storms. We'll quote both options so you can compare.

What affects the price

Every property is different, so we give a fixed written quote. These are the things that move the price:

  • Distance from the street. Longer runs need more cable.
  • Overhead or underground. Underground work may need trenching or boring under driveways and paths.
  • Point of attachment. Whether the bracket on your house needs replacing.
  • Your meter box. Whether it can stay, needs moving, or needs replacing.
  • Network requirements. A bigger supply may need network approval.
